Our Relationship with Materials: A Focus on Wood

At Jouin Manku, our design philosophy is deeply intertwined with the materials we choose to work with. Among the myriad of materials, wood holds a special place in our hearts.

Wood is not just a material; it is a storyteller. Its characteristics reveal its history: twisted, knotty wood speaks of a life in windy conditions, while smooth, flawless wood comes from a tree sheltered from storms. This intrinsic narrative makes wood an exceptionally compelling material.

"I’m particularly fond of certain materials, but wood stands out for me. Growing up in the Canadian countryside, I developed a deep connection with these majestic living beings. When you cut down a tree, you take on the responsibility of transforming it, its entire history embedded in its fibers.” - Sanjit Manku

To build larger, taller structures with wood, we must advance safety standards and transform perceptions. Wood, as an organic material, marries exact science with creativity, providing an unparalleled sense of well-being. At our agency, we are passionate about designing chairs and stairs. In Strasbourg, we transformed an old stable into a brasserie for chef Marc Haeberlin, crafting a wooden staircase that echoes the movement of the horses once housed there.

"I recall my generation almost forgetting that wood is a modern, futuristic material. Imagine walking in a forest surrounded by century-old trees, harvested to create planks, furniture, and contemporary designs. Planting trees today is an investment for 200 years, showing wood as a material of the present and future." - Patrick Jouin

Using local wood is essential. France, with its rich forests, must responsibly exploit these resources, valuing hardwoods in architecture. This sustainable approach maintains our forests' beauty and productivity, as it has been done for centuries. By educating the public, we can integrate wood more fully into our lives, understanding its origins and significance.

The versatility of wood captivates us. It is perfect for flat surfaces and intricate curves, offering unique solutions in various design contexts. Projects like the curved beams of Frank Gehry’s Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris or the Centre Pompidou-Metz by Shigeru Ban and Jean de Gastines highlight wood's potential for functional and striking designs.
Wood’s nobility lies in its historical significance and ongoing relevance. From ancient shelters to contemporary design, wood remains endlessly fascinating due to its capacity and potential. This sentiment is reflected in our projects like Hotel Les Haras in Strasbourg and the Van Cleef & Arpels boutique in Ginza, Tokyo. At Hotel Les Haras, raw wood evokes historical essence, paired with natural leather and brushed metal for a modern yet authentic space. In Ginza, ash-patinated wood, diaphanous fabrics, and green enamel decorations create a serene atmosphere merging local culture with innovation. Our use of wood transcends aesthetics; it brings spaces to life.

Our designs invite people to engage differently with the space, breathing new life into historical settings. This approach underscores our sensitivity to the dynamic interplay between tradition and modernity, creating vibrant, living spaces.

In essence, wood at Jouin Manku is more than a material; it is a bridge connecting past and future, crafting stories filled with warmth, history, and continuity. This is the essence of our design philosophy and the heart of our creations.
